Overview of retail sector advertising on TV during January-October 2008

Key Findings:

  • Retail sector advertising on TV has seen a growth of 40 per cent during January-October 2008 compared to the same period in 2007.
  • Independent retailers garnered a high share of 89 per cent of overall advertising of retail sector on TV during January-October 2008.
  • Pantaloons Retail India Ltd was the number one advertisers in retail sector on TV during January-October 2008.
  • 'Hot Spot' was the top new advertisers of retail sector advertised on TV during January-October 2008.

The retail sector is further divided into independent retailers, other retail categories and display shop segments. Shops like the Pantaloons, Subhiksha Trading Service Ltd etc form the independent retail category. The display shop category consists of all the display retail shops like A to Z Footwear, Afia Travels etc. Local retailers of companies for e.g. retailers of Samsung refrigerators are classified as the retail categories.

  • During January-October 2008, retail sector ad volumes recorded growth of 40 per cent on TV compared to January-October 2007.

Quarterly advertising of retail sector on TV during January-October 2008.

  • Retail sector advertising peaks during the third quarter (FY 06-07 and FY 07-08) i.e. during festive months.

Share of segments of retail sector on TV during January-October 2008.

  • Independent retailers had the maximum share of 89 per cent followed by display retail shops and other retail categories with 11 per cent and 0.2 per cent share respectively during January-October 2008.

  • All of the top ten advertisers of retail sector belonged to independent retailers category, which accounted for 44 per cent share of retail sector TV ad pie during January-October 2008.
  • Pantaloons Retail India Ltd, The Chennai Silks Group and Subhiksha Trading Service Ltd were the top three independent retailers in TV advertising of retail sector during January-October 2008.

New advertisers of retail sector on TV during January-October 2008.

  • Hot Spot, Emmanuval Silks and ITJ Retail Chain were the top three new advertisers in retail sector advertised on TV during January-October 2008.
  • Seven out of top ten new advertisers of retail sector advertised on TV were related to clothing and textiles.

Advertising of retail sector on (national vs regional) channels.

  • Retail sector advertising on regional and national channels was in the ratio of 73:27 during January-October 2008.
  • Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh - the top three states together accounted for 76 per cent share of overall retail sector advertising on regional channels during January-October 2008.
